Rocket Phonics Review

by Just_Aimee on September 26, 2009

Silly Girl can’t read very well. She is 12 and 7th grade and has learning disabilities. When she was little and we first noticed she was struggling, we asked her how she will read the road signs when she was old enough…she thought a second…and replied “I will marry someone who can read.”

The journey to help her discover the joy of reading for herself has been at times long and frustrating–especially because her little brother had no problems learning!

I was so excited when we were chosen to review Rocket Phonics. Rocket Phonics is a phonics program that contains a series of games and fun activities to teach children how to read. It is created for children ages 4-10 but it is easy to adapt to my daughter’s age.RocketPhonicsLogonoshadow

Rocket Phonics has a three-step approach:

  1. Teach an initial teaching alphabet (ITA) in which each symbol has a unique sound. Rocket Phonics uses 36 symbols to represent the sounds of the English language.
  2. Teach sound blending
  3. Get the student reading.

In the six weeks we have been using this product, we are still focusing on recognizing the initial teaching alphabet. To do this, we spend about 15 minutes a day playing fun games–the teacher’s manual has a lot of suggestions. Attributing a sound to a letter has been a difficult process for my daughter and Rocket Phonics program is hands down the best way we have found to help her learn without it being a drag for the both of us. (some of the things we have tried–online programs, off line programs, private tutoring, Sylvan Learning center…etc. All ended in frustration!)

The multisensory nature of the program keeps learning fun. My daughter loves to play games–so when learning is a game, she is eager to participate. To be honest, she is still struggling to always get the ITA’s correct…but at least we are able to practice every day without tears. Throughout the year, I will be updating our progress through the program…with hopes that it will all click for her.

From the perspective of a mom who has felt frustrations of a child learning to read, I recommend that you give Rocket Phonics a try. At initial look, this program may seem expensive. Rocket Phonics costs $160 (& $15 for shipping) BUT does come with a 90-day 100% money back guarantee. It is also non-consumable so can be used with multiple children–divide the cost between having more then one child just starting their journey to read or struggling like my daughter and this program quickly becomes a great investment.

The program includes:2009RPkit-Mask2web

  • Bingo chips
  • Bingo sheets(with more available to download) and big movement games for younger readers.
  • Rocket Peeker
  • 28 weeks of freebies sent right to your inbox.
